Seven employers ordered to pay MPF arrears

The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:

    The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (February 18) obtained an order for payment of outstanding MPF contributions at about $60,000 against one employer in the District Court. Meanwhile, the MPFA pursued six claims in the Small Claims Tribunal for some $80,000 on behalf of 10 employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employers.

    The District Court issued a judgment against an employer, namely, See Sport Limited. The defendant was ordered to pay the MPFA the sum of $64,018.06, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable to five employees of the defendant.

    At the tribunal's hearing today, the six defendants, comprising Borneo International Education Services Limited, Pang Yuen Ching formerly trading as Luen Wo Medicine Co., Compact Building Materials Company Limited, Aurora Aspect Enterprise (Holdings) Limited, Archetype Interactive Limited and Chan Sui Man trading as Man Chit Express Co., did not appear. In their absence, the adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA the sums of $29,095.5, $25,515.25, $18,900, $5,225.29, $1,890 and $211.46, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.

    The amounts awarded at the District Court and the tribunal will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The District Court ordered the defendant to pay costs of $930 and the tribunal further ordered the respective defendants to pay $135, $180, $100, $69, $136 and $80 as the costs in respect of the claims.

    Compact Building Materials Company Limited pleaded guilty previously at Kwun Tong Magistracy to five counts of failing to enroll its employee in an MPF scheme as required by the ordinance and was fined $16,000.
