The Highways Department is committed to giving due consideration to greening works when constructing infrastructural projects.
The Route 8 (the section between Cheung Sha Wan and Sha Tin) Community Planting Day ceremony was held today (February 16). The Project Manager/Major Works of the Highways Department, Mr Chow Ying Shun, the Chairman of Sham Shui Po District Council, Dr Chan Tung, Sham Shui Po District Councillors and the headmistresses of the Cheung Sha Wan Catholic Primary School and Sham Shui Po Government Primary School were the officiating guests.
Over 150 students, parents and teachers from the two primary schools participated in the event.
To improve the quality of the environment, the Highways Department is incorporating extensive planting works into the Route 8 project (the section between Cheung Sha Wan and Sha Tin) where 1,550 trees, 70,000 whips and 375,000 shrubs will be planted.
This section of Route 8 between Cheung Sha Wan and Sha Tin is a dual three-lane carriageway with a total length of about 5.9 km, connecting Cheung Sha Wan in West Kowloon and Tai Wai in Sha Tin. It will be the fourth road link between Sha Tin and Kowloon.
In organising the community planting day, the Highways Department hopes to enhance public awareness of environmental protection through its participation in the greening of the environment.
