Hong Kong creativity showcased at Design Exchange (with photos)

    An exhibition highlighting Hong Kong¡¦s creativity and the richness of its design industry opened today (February 8, Toronto time) in Toronto¡¦s Design Exchange, which is described as Canada¡¦s design centre and design museum. 

    The¡§Chinese Design, Everyday¡¨exhibition, which is sponsored by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) in Toronto, aims to provide a foundation for understanding design in the greater China region. Apart from Hong Kong, it also features a selection of design work from mainland China, Taiwan and Macao, and the role that Chinese design plays in everyday life.

    Visitors will be introduced to an extensive graphic history along with numerous artifacts from the contemporary era in the context of everyday life. A marriage of the millennia-old Chinese cultural heritage and the most current Western and international trends will be examined through a display of contemporary design objects, traditional household items like package design and dinnerware, Mahjong table, fashion and the latest in lap-top computers.

    The opening night of the¡§Chinese Design, Everyday¡¨ exhibition will feature the¡§Hong Kong: Gateway to China¡¨¡V a selection of designs and products taken from the¡§Project 9707¡¨, a design project to celebrate and augment the achievements and talents of Hong Kong design launched last year at the Hong Kong Design Centre.

    Officiating at today¡¦s opening reception were President & CEO of the Design Exchange, Ms Samantha Sannella; Curator Professor Ms Wendy Siuyi Wong and Acting Director of the HKETO, Mr Chan Yu-cheong.

    Speaking at the opening reception, Mr Chan said, ¡§In addition to promoting cultural exchange between Canada and Hong Kong, the staging of the 'Chinese Design, Everyday' exhibition also provides an excellent opportunity to showcase  Hong Kong¡¦s creative industry, particularly the work of Hong Kong designers.¡¨

    Mr Chan also thanked Design Exchange and Curator Professor Ms Wendy Siuyi Wong for  organising  this event, so that more Canadians had the opportunity to better understand Hong Kong¡¦s creative industry.

    As part of the exhibition, Ms Wong will also host a curatorial lecture on February 21 at 12 noon at Design Exchange.

    The¡§Chinese Design, Everyday¡¨exhibition will be on display from today until April 13 at Design Exchange (234 Bay Street). Opening hours are from 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday, and from 12 noon to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
