The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, said he was impressed by the Social Welfare Departmentˇ¦s Tuen Mun Children and Juvenile Home (TMCJH) following a visit there this afternoon (February 1).
Set up in March, 2007, TMCJH is a modern multi-purpose residential complex serving as a place of refuge, place of detention, remand home, probation home and reformatory school for children and juveniles in legal custody.
All the six former correctional/residential homes of the Social Welfare Department came under the roof of TMCJH in phases from March to July, 2007.
TMCJH, with a capacity of 388, is equipped with state-of-the-art monitoring and home management facilities, including CCTV system, to provide a safe and secure environment. Facilities and areas for different groups of juveniles are properly segregated.
Mr Cheung said co-location of the various correctional/residential homes not only simplified staff structure to better utilise human resources, but also improved the quality of care and supervision of the residents.
ˇ§It is a classic example of successful re-engineering and streamlining,ˇ¨ he said.
He commended staff of TMCJH for their dedication and professionalism in ensuring the smooth operation of such a sophisticated institution for children and juveniles of both sexes.
Services and programmes provided by TMCJH include education and vocational training tailor-made by the Vocational Training Council, individual counselling and group work programmes, community service, recreational activities, medical and health care and clinical psychological service. Guardian visits and home leave will also be arranged.
