Hong Kong and Kuwait today (January 27) signed a letter of intent to develop trade relations between the two places.

The letter covered technical co-operation, facilitation of business visits, trade fairs and exhibitions, as well as imports and exports.

Chief Executive Donald Tsang and the Prime Minister, H.H. Sheikh Nasser Al-Mohammed Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, witnessed the signing at the Al Sief Palace by Hong Kong Special Representative for Economic and Trade Affairs to the European Communities, Mr  Duncan Pescod, and the Kuwaiti Minister for Trade and Commerce, Sheikh Falah Al Hajiri.

On the CE's busy second day in a formal visit to Kuwait, he met the Amir of Kuwait, H. H. Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, in the morning with Crown Prince H.H. Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, in attendance, before calling on the Governor of Central Bank of Kuwait, H.E. Sheikh Salem AbdulAziz Al-Sabah, and the Acting Speaker of the Kuwait National Assembly, H.E. Dr Mohammad Al-Busairi.

Mr Tsang said the letter-of-intent would lead to development of beneficial relations between Kuwait and Hong Kong.

He had an interview with local media later in the day to outline what had led him to make the trip, his first visit to the Middle East since he took up office in 2005.

Mr Tsang will conclude the Kuwait portion of his Middle East tour tomorrow before going to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
