The Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education met for the first time today (November 28).
Presiding at the meeting, its chairman, Mr Irving Koo, said, "Members of the board are enthusiastic about gifted education and developing the potential of our young people. I believe with their expertise and experience, the academy will be able to explore new spheres of gifted education and provide diversified learning opportunities to expand our talent pool. The academy can build on the good work already underway in HK schools."
As announced in the Chief Executive's Policy Address in October 2006, the Administration set up the academy to focus on co-ordinating with educational bodies to extend the ambit of gifted education and provide more structured training programmes outside the school setting for gifted students. The service target will be extended from senior secondary students to those aged from 10 to 18 and enhanced professional support will also be offered to teachers, parents and academics.
Incorporated as an independent body with assets of $200 million from both the Administration and a donation by Sir Joseph Hotung, the academy has a high degree of independence and flexibility in its planning, operations, staffing and fund management, and its accountability is examined under stringent corporate organisation and administration rules and measures.
