Public invited to join Comic Character Design Competition
*********************************************************

Adults and students alike are being invited to design comic characters with simple graphics that can best reflect the characteristics of the three classes under the Control of Obscene and Indecent Articles Ordinance (COIAO). The winning designs may become the blueprints for the production of souvenirs.

The three classes are Class I (neither obscene nor indecent), Class II (indecent) and Class III (obscene). More information can be obtained from http://mediaed.etvonline.tv/mediaed_coiao390.html.

The Comic Character Design Competition, which will begin tomorrow (November 26), invites entries from three groups: the public, secondary schools and primary schools. For the latter two groups, each school is invited to submit two entries, with each entry comprising three comic characters in three JPEG files. All entries for the Comic Character Design Competition should be submitted through the activity website: www.merit.gov.hk on or before January 15, 2008.

The assessment criteria of the competition will include: the characteristics of the comic character in each class, aesthetic merit, simplicity of the graphics and suitability to become the basis for designing souvenirs to promote the COIAO. The winner, first runner-up and second runner-up in each group will receive a cash coupon valued at up to $600, $450 and $300 respectively.

Shortlisted entries of the three groups will be uploaded onto the activity website for members of the public, including students, to guess which three comic characters best reflect the characteristics of the classes concerned. Those who can guess the winners of all three classes will be entitled to join a lucky draw for eight prizes of a $100 coupon each.

The Comic Character Design Competition is one of the two major activities under the 2007 Meritorious Website Contest (MWC) organised by the Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority, and co-organised by the Education Bureau, the Committee for Home-School Co-operation, the Hong Kong Internet Service Providers Association and Radio Television Hong Kong. The other activity is the Meritorious Website Contest which will last until December 31.

Formerly named The 10 Healthy Websites Contest when first launched in 2000, the objectives of the MWC are to encourage young people to pay more visits to healthy websites - websites without any objectionable material - and to recognise the contributions of producers of healthy websites. The slogan for this year's activity is "Surf smartly. Spend our time wisely".

Details of the above activities under 2007 MWC are available on the activity website: www.merit.gov.hk.
