Contractor fined for violation of safety rules

    Metro World Engineering Limited was fined $35,000 at Kwun Tong Magistrates' Court today (November 19) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance.  The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident on October 10, 2006, at a construction site in Lam Tin when a worker was hit by falling concrete while engaged in the demolition of partition walls.

     According to Section 6A(2)(a) of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance, employers must ensure the safety and health at work for their employees. Any employer who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $500,000 and to imprisonment for six months.

     According to Regulation 49(1A) of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations, a contractor must take precautions to prevent workers from being struck by a falling object. Any contractor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000.
