YWCA Chinese Orchestra brings back romantic memories

    Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra will bring back romantic memories in its "Love is ..." concert next month (December) with young erhu musician Yang Xue and guest conductor Ho Man-chuen.

     The orchestra will play many golden classics, including "Send Me a Rose", "The Red Chamber Lament" (from Dream of the Red Chamber Suite), "Au Revoir, Mon Amour", "My Heart will Go On" from Titanic, "Theme songs from Phantom of the Opera", "When Two Hearts are Bound by Love and Faith" (from a Hong Kong television series "The Return of the Condor Heroes"), "Wishes" and "Who Do You Love The Most". Yang Xue will perform erhu solo on "Carmen Fantasy", "Why Are the Flowers So Red" and gaohu solo on "The Butterfly Lovers" concerto.

     Yang Xue is an outstanding young erhu recitalist. Yang graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music and came under the tutelage of distinguished erhu performers and educators Professor Zhao Hanyan and Professor Yan Jiewen. She won the First Prize at the 8th International Classical Chinese Instrument Competition in Taipei and has won many other prizes in competitions. She has been invited to take part in ensemble performance with orchestras in Holland, Belgium, Italy, Russia, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

     Ho Man-chuen conducted many orchestras in Shanghai and was the conductor of the Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra when it went on tour to the Mainland, the United States, Canada, Malaysia and Singapore. Ho has collaborated with famous music virtuosi such as Hao Yuqi, Xiao Baiyong and Min Huifen. He is currently the Music Officer of the Chinese Music Section of the Music Office, conductor of Hong Kong Youth Chinese Orchestra and Youth Chinese Orchestra of Music Office, instructor of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and a resident conductor of the Academy Chinese Orchestra.

     Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra is an interest group under the Hong Kong YWCA. It has organised regular performances to introduce Chinese folk music of different styles to the public and to provide training and performing opportunities to local young musicians. The orchestra has collaborated with an array of music virtuosi and has received great acclaim from audiences and critics.

     Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "Love is ..." Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra concert will be staged at 3pm on December 9 (Sunday) at the Auditorium, Yuen Long Theatre. Tickets priced at $80, $110 and $140, are now available at URBTIX outlets, while senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients may have 50% off (limited quotas for students and CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis). A 10% discount applies to Friends of LCSD performing venues.
