The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) obtained an order today (October 4) in the High Court for payment of outstanding Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) contributions at about $1 million against an employer. The MPFA also pursued two claims in the Small Claims Tribunal for some $70,000 on behalf of 48 employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employers.
The High Court issued a judgment against Sing Pao Newspaper Management Limited. The defendant was ordered to pay the MPFA $1,071,860.54, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable to 282 employees.
At the tribunal's hearing, the defendant, Captain Hill International Limited, did not dispute the amount claimed. The Adjudicator ordered it to pay the MPFA $25,516.39, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.
The other defendant, Hong Kong Link Tours Limited, did not appear at today's hearing. In its absence, the Adjudicator ordered it to pay the MPFA $46,379.7, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.
The amounts both awarded at the High Court and the tribunal will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The High Court and the tribunal further ordered the defendants to pay costs of $1,550 for the High Court case and $110, $180 for the tribunal cases as the costs in respect of the claims.
