Plea to voters in HK Arts Development Council nomination exercise
*********************************************************

The Home Affairs Bureau today (September 26) urge voters to actively take part in the polling for the nomination of representatives of arts interests in the 2007 Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) nomination exercise, which will be held from Friday to Sunday (September 28-30).  Through this nomination exercise, 10 representatives will be nominated to participate in the work of the HKADC.

A spokesman for the Home Affairs Bureau said that 7,029 voters had registered this year, representing an increase of approximately 32% when compared to 2004.

"I look forward to the active participation of voters in the three-day poll, as their votes will determine the list of representatives to be submitted to the Chief Executive for consideration of appointment to the HKADC for the next term, which will begin on January 1, 2008," the spokesman said.

Under the HKADC Ordinance, HKADC members will be responsible for planning, promoting and developing the arts in Hong Kong.  They will also determine the use of the annual HKADC budget to support local arts organisations and arts workers.

A "cross-interest voting" system, which was used in the previous nomination exercises, will be adopted.  Voters from all 10 arts interests may cast votes for candidates standing for nomination in the six contested arts interests (Arts Criticism, Dance, Literary Arts, Music, Visual Arts and Chinese Opera (Xiqu)).  There is only one candidate standing for nomination in each of the four arts interests (Arts Administration, Arts Education, Drama and Film Arts).  Accordingly, there will be no polling for these four arts interests.

Candidates for the 10 arts interests are as follows:
