A bishop chess-piece, one of a collection of 93 chess-pieces probably made in Norway between 1150 to 1200. The bishop was a recent addition to the chess game at that time, reflecting the increasing importance of the Church in the hierarchy of state. The chess pieces possibly belonged to a merchant's stock lost in transit between Norway and Ireland.   Close
