"Semiscon Vocal Band" plays a cappella in unique style

   Renowned Taiwan a cappella group Semiscon Vocal Band, will lead off the Leisure and Cultural Services Department's "A Cappella Series" this year with two concerts to be held in October.

    The band will perform in a wide range of vocal styles ranging from classical, jazz to pop music of the East and West. The programme includes "Theme songs from James Bond 007 movies", "Leaving on the Jet Plane", "Eternal Flame", "Forever Blue Sky", "The Girl from Tropical Island", "David Tao's Medley", "Ode to Joy" and "Yes or No".

    Semiscon has made a breakthrough in traditional ensemble singing, which incorporates theatre, dance, movement, formation, design, harmony and a cappella. The fabulous performance earned Semiscon the coveted Ward Swingle Award in the 4th Vokal dot Total International A Cappella Competition in Austria, which is considered as the "Oscar" of a cappella music in Europe. The group has toured in the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Belgium and Holland and impressed the audiences.

    Semiscon Vocal Band was established in 2002 - the first professional a cappella group in Taiwan. Members came from diverse professions, including soprano Julie Cheng, America Chang, mezzo soprano Chrisy O, tenor E. Ray Chiang, Tom Lin, bass Mike Tsai, vocal percussion Jerry Chen and Kenray Tung. The ensemble released its first a cappella album in Taiwan, "Semiscon" in 2004.

    "A Cappella Series: The Semiscon Vocal Band" concerts will be staged at 8pm on October 3 (Wednesday) at Theatre, Hong Kong City Hall; and on October 4 (Thursday) at Theatre, Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre. Ticket price ranged from $100 to $240, are now available at URBTIX outlets. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients (limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A 10% discount applies to Friends of LCSD performing venues. Group discount on purchase with "A Cappella Series: The Idea of North" is also available. ¡@¡@A free pre-concert workshop (in Putonghua) will be held at 7.30pm on October 2 (Tuesday) at AC1, 4/F., Administration Building, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Free admission vouchers are available for collection from September 2 onwards at the enquiry counter of Hong Kong Cultural Centre on a first-come-first-served basis.
