The following is issued on behalf of the Electoral Affairs Commission:
The Electoral Affairs Commission announced today (August 28) that a Legislative Council by-election would be held on Sunday, December 2, to fill a vacancy in the Hong Kong Island geographical constituency.
"In accordance with the electoral laws, the nomination period must not be less than 14 days or more than 21 days. It must end not less than 28 days and not more than 42 days before the polling day. The nomination period, which will start in mid-October, will be published in the Government gazette later," a commission spokesman said.
To avoid confusing electors on polling day, the commission considered it was not appropriate to hold the by-election on the same day as the District Council ordinary election on November 18.
The Electoral Affairs Commission will ensure the by-election is held in an open, honest and fair manner.
