Applications for new SUS courses open

    The Labour and Welfare Bureau today (August 22) launched the third phase of the government-subsidised training courses tailor-made for the film, television and entertainment industry under the Skills Upgrading Scheme (SUS).

     Introducing the new courses at a press briefing today, Convenor of the SUS Film, Television and Entertainment Industry Working Group Mr Tsui Siu-ming said the courses would provide focused skills training for in-service workers of the film, television and entertainment industry.

     The courses would help improve the professional knowledge of in-service workers and better equip them to meet the challenging needs of the industry as well as upgrade the standard of the industry as a whole.

     :Since its launch in 2004, the SUS・s Film, television and entertainment courses have received wide support from the industry. A total of 125 classes have been organised in the first two phases and close to 2,500 in-service workers have been trained.

     :The Government has set aside about $3.65 million to subsidise this new phase of training courses, which will provide 2,265 training places,; Mr Tsui said.

     Also attending the press briefing, Convenor of the SUS Film, Television and Entertainment Industry Course Development / Trainers・ Qualification and Quality Assurance Sub-group Dr Cheuk Pak-tong pointed out that 10 new courses, together with the existing 27 courses, would be available in this third phase under the SUS・s film, television and entertainment scheme.  

     The new courses offered include film production, voice dubbing, comic and animation design, basic pop song composition and pop song singing skills.

     Since its inception in 2001, the SUS now covers 25 industries. The scheme provides professional and specific skills training for in-service workers with an aim to enhance their employability and competitiveness in the labour market as well as promote the culture of continuing education and lifelong learning in the community. So far, more than 9,400 classes have been conducted for more than 190,000 workers.

     Other guests at the press briefing included the Principal Assistant Secretary (Manpower) for Labour and Welfare, Ms Karyn Chan, Ambassador for the SUS Film, Television and Entertainment Industry, Miss Karen Lam, Ambassador for the SUS Film, Television and Entertainment Industry music course, Mr Suen Yiu-wai, Mr Jo-ming Fong, Ms Janis Chan and Mr Ho-ming Luk.
