Hong Kong Symphony Orchestra will stage two concerts featuring old melodies of renowned films."
The oldies include "Memory" from "Cats", “Don't Cry for Me Argentina" from "Evita", "I Don't Know How to Love Him" which was the theme from "Jesus Christ Superstar", The Pink Panther Theme, The James Bond Theme, and many more.
The programme will be performed by Hong Kong Symphony Orchestra under the leadership of conductor Ambrose Law, with coloratura Vivian Chan Lai-chun and Boheme Youth Choir.
The Hong Kong Symphony Orchestra is the largest and most versatile performing group under the Hong Kong Symphony Society. The orchestra can be augmented to quadruple-wind scale with more than 100 players. Its wide repertoire covers large-scale and sophisticated orchestral and symphonic works. Besides Western classical music, the orchestra also promotes contemporary Chinese orchestral music and other types of music.
Vivian Chan has been one of the most active sopranos in Hong Kong in recent years. She had been invited to give two recitals at the Tan Kah Kee Memorial Hall of Huaqiao University and the Xiamen Gulangyu Concert Hall in 1996. After that, she appeared in Guangzhou, Macau, Zhongshan and Beijing for big occasions. Her repertoire includes selections from Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and arias from Italian operas. She was a soloist in the full-length production, the Humen Beihuan, a cantata about the life and times of Lin Zexu, the Qing Dynasty officer who burnt thousands of caskets of opium imported by the Western traders at Bocca Tigris.
Chan is currently the Artistic Director and conductor of the Boheme Children's Choir. Her profile is listed in "A Dictionary of Chinese Musicians" published by the People's Press in March, 1998.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, concerts by Hong Kong Symphony Orchestra will be staged at 8pm, September 21 and 22 (Friday and Saturday) at the Auditorium, Tai Po Civic Centre and Tuen Mun Town Hall respectively. Tickets priced from $60 to $100 will be available on August 21 onwards at all URBTIX outlets. Senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients may have 50% off (limited quotas for CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis).
