***********************************************************

The film series "The New Decade: Hong Kong Films", featuring a mix of Hong Kong films from recent years, kicked off at the Brooklyn Academy of Music Rose Cinemas on Thursday evening (August 16, New York time) in New York.

This is the second of three film events in New York to mark the 10th Anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The film series was co-presented by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York (HKETONY) and the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM).

This nine-film series spotlights directors at the vanguard of New Hong Kong cinema as they take the pulse of Hong Kong society ten years after its return to Chinese sovereignty. It covers a mix of genres and styles, from the triad pictures of Johnnie To and the action comedy "House of Fury" to the opening film, the romantic drama "2 Become 1".

Welcoming guests to the opening night of "The New Decade: Hong Kong Films", Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York, Ms Monica Chen said that Hong Kong movies have moved into the international arena with many Hong Kong productions winning prestigious awards in international events.

She said, "It is an accomplishment illustrating the growing appeal of Hong Kong's film talents, which now straddle both Eastern and Western markets."

This also marks the fourth year the HKETONY is collaborating with BAM to present Hong Kong films to American audience.

Other movies featured in this year's film series include: "After This Our Exile", "Perhaps Love", "Breaking News", "Crazy N' The City", and a sneak preview of "Exiled", the latest film from action auteur Johnnie To. The series ends on August 26 with a double feature of Johnnie To's gangster films "Election" and "Election Triad".
