Three employers ordered to pay MPF non-payments

The following is issued on behalf of the MPFA:

     The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (August 16) pursued three claims in the Small Claims Tribunal for some $50,000 on behalf of 10 employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employers.

     At the tribunal's hearing, the defendant, Lam Yin Lap trading as Yi Yi Noodle Shop, did not dispute the amount claimed. The Adjudicator ordered it to pay the MPFA $22,713.75, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable. The Adjudicator also ordered the defendant to pay the MPFA $5,000 being financial penalty imposed by the MPFA for failure to make MPF contributions for its employee.

     The other two defendants, Style Limited trading as Ying Choi Seafood Restaurant and Lui Pik Shan Amy and Chow Sze Ho formerly trading as Corner Accessory Co., did not appear. In their absence, the Adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA $25,515.69 and $1,607.67 respectively, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.

     The amounts awarded will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF account as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The tribunal further awarded $240, $186 and $210 as the costs in respect of the claims.
