Record number of GC electors on the roll
****************************************

The number of registered electors on the 2007 provisional register for geographical constituencies (GC) has reached a record high of more than 3,295,000.

A spokesman for the Registration and Electoral Office (REO) said today (August 14) there were about 142,000 newly registered electors. Taking into account the deletions of electors who had passed away or who had not reported their latest residential addresses to the REO, there was a net increase of more than 109,000 electors on the roll than in 2006.

The geographical constituencies provisional register and omissions list, along with those for functional constituencies and Election Committee subsectors, will be released tomorrow (August 15) for public inspection until August 29.

More statistical information about these provisional registers is available at the voter registration website www.voterregistration.gov.hk.

"All validated applications for registration as electors, and changes of particulars that have been made known to the REO, are included in the respective provisional registers," the spokesman said.

"For those who are no longer eligible for registration, their names are removed from their respective registers and included in the omissions lists which will also be published."

Anyone who has applied to register but does not find his name in the relevant register, or whose name is included in an omissions list, or who finds that his entries are incorrectly recorded, may lodge a notice of claim in person with the REO by August 29.

Anyone who considers that a person is not eligible to be registered may lodge a notice of objection in person with the REO also by August 29.

Specified forms for claims and objections are available from the REO and can be downloaded at www.reo.gov.hk/en/voter/application.htm.

Those on the provisional registers are advised to report any change in addresses and registration particulars to the REO by August 29.

"Failure to do so may affect their eligibility to vote in the District Council election in November," the spokesman said.

Since the deadline in 2006 for updating of registered electors' particulars and up to July 30, 2007, the REO has processed 265,000 cases of updating of particulars. (Note: REO wishes to clarify that the actual number of updates processed up to July 16 should be 226,000, and the figure reported in the previous press release on July 26 was incorrect as a result of a clerical error in the calculation of the figure.)

For geographical constituencies, full copies of the relevant provisional register and omissions list will be available for public inspection during ordinary business hours from Monday to Friday at the REO at 10/F Harbour Centre, 25 Harbour Road, Wan Chai. The relevant section of the register pertinent to a particular district will be available at the respective District Office.

For functional constituencies and Election Committee subsectors, full copies of the relevant provisional registers and omissions lists are available for public inspection at the REO's Harbour Centre office and its office at 10/F Guardian House, 32 Oi Kwan Road, Wan Chai, and the District Offices in Central, Mong Kok, Kwun Tong, Sha Tin and Tsuen Wan.

The public may also make enquiries to the REO hotline, 2891 1001, to check whether their names are listed in the registers or the omissions lists.

The REO will publish the final registers on or before September 25.
