In response to media enquiries regarding a suggestion to hold the District Council (DC) election and the Legislative Council (LegCo) by-election for the Hong Kong Island geographical constituency on the same day, a spokesman for the Registration and Electoral Office (REO) gave the following reply:
The REO is making preparations for the LegCo by-election. We need to make detailed arrangements for the by-election. The key consideration is to ensure that the arrangements will not be confusing to voters and that the election will be conducted fairly in accordance with the relevant legislation and guidelines.
The suggestion to conduct the DC election and the LegCo by-election on the same day may cause confusion to the voters. We have reservations about this proposal.
The REO will make its decision on the election date for the LegCo by-election after thorough consideration of the relevant factors.
