Appointments to Executive Committee of Cantonese Opera Development Fund

    The Government today (August 10) announced appointments to the Executive Committee of the Cantonese Opera Development Fund for the period from August 10 to July 31, 2009.

     The Cantonese Opera Development Fund, officially launched on November 27, 2005, is aimed at raising and applying fund to support researches, studies, projects and activities to promote and sustain the development of Cantonese opera. The fund was set up in accordance with the Secretary for Home Affairs Incorporation Ordinance (Chapter 1044) with the Secretary for Home Affairs as the Trustee of Fund.

     The Advisory Committee of the Cantonese Opera Development Fund has re-appointed Dr Stephen Chow Chun-kay as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Cantonese Opera Development Fund. Nine members are re-appointed and three new members appointed to the Executive Committee, which is tasked to advise mainly on matters relating to the drawing up of procedures and criteria for inviting and assessing funding applications, considering applications and making recommendations on funding allocation.

     The following is a list of members of the Executive Committee of the Cantonese Opera Development Fund from August 10 to July 31, 2009:

     The Fund has raised more than $20 million to date, including $9 million from the Board of Management of the Chinese Permanent Cemeteries and $7 million from the Chinese Temples Committee. As of July 2007, more than $9 million has been granted to support 123 Cantonese opera projects, including performances jointly presented by experienced artists and new talents, children or youth cultural exchange, arts education, professional training and community promotional projects, venue development projects, research and archival projects.
