The Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, today (August 8) expressed profound sadness at the passing of Legislative Councillor Ma Lik.
"I visited Mr Ma two weeks ago. He was very concerned about Hong Kong, even on his sick bed. I was deeply saddened to hear of his death," Mr Tsang said.
"Mr Ma was a committed political leader with vision and a passion for Hong Kong and the motherland. He will be remembered for his distinguished service to the community, in particular his active involvement in the drafting and promotion of the Basic Law. He made considerable contribution to the smooth transition of Hong Kong and the implementation of 'One Country, Two Systems'.
"Mr Ma also promoted the development of local political parties. Under his leadership, the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong has become a close partner of the Government. The Administration joins me in extending our deepest condolences to his family."
Mr Ma was Chairman of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong and a Hong Kong deputy to the National People's Congress. He had also served in a number of public bodies including the Commission on Strategic Development and the Joint Committee for the Promotion of the Basic Law of Hong Kong. Mr Ma was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star in 2005.
