Theatre Smith-Gilmour (Canada) and Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre will co-produce a physical theatre, "Lu Xun Blossoms", next month (September).
A dynamic and ingenious play based on five short stories by Lu Xun, the 20th century acclaimed Chinese literati whose influence still endures today, it gives an insight into old China. "Lu Xun Blossoms" employs the body language of three Canadians and three Chinese actors to bring an inventive and witty adaptation of the familiar characters created by the father of modern Chinese literature. In a dynamic change of personas, the six actors become men, women, elderly, children, or even stone lions at the entrance of a house.
The Hong Kong debut of "Lu Xun Blossoms" will be staged at 8pm on September 6, 7 and 8 (Thursday, Friday and Saturday), and at 3pm on September 9 (Sunday), at the Studio Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
Michele Smith met Dean Gilmour in 1978 while studying at the School of Jacques Lecoq in Paris, France, and they formed Theatre Smith-Gilmour in 1980. Since then, the theatre has been frequently nominated for different awards, winning seven Dora Mavor Moore awards and the Montreal English Theatre Critics Award for Best Ensemble.
Since its founding in 1995, Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre has performed more than 100 productions of its own and jointly created many productions with companies from the United Kingdom, the United States, Russia, Germany and Japan.
Performed in English and Putonghua with Chinese and English subtitles, "Lu Xun Blossoms" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets priced at $140 and $220 are now available at URBTIX outlets, while senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients can have 50% off. There are limited quotas for students and CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis. A 10% discount applies to Friends of LCSD performing venues.
