CSD looking for rehabilitation centre inmate
********************************************

A female inmate receiving training at Wai Lan Rehabilitation Centre (WLRC) went missing today (August 1).

The inmate, surnamed Cheung and aged 19, was admitted to Chi Lan Rehabilitation Centre on a charge of theft in late March. Having completed her initial detention period, she was admitted to WLRC in late July for a subsequent period of community-based residence. She went missing today about 12.30pm after going to the toilet during her induction training.

A Correctional Services Department (CSD) spokesperson said the inmate had yet to be located and the centre had activated relevant response procedures. The Police have been asked to help in the search operation.

The CSD will launch an internal investigation into the incident.

Located in Tai Lam, WLRC provides Phase Two training for young female offenders who have completed Phase One disciplinary training in Chi Lan Rehabilitation Centre. Under the provision of the Rehabilitation Centres Ordinance, WLRC aims to provide female young offenders with a community-based reintegration programme designed to prepare for their return to society. After receiving a seven-day induction training, they will be arranged to study, work or engage in any other approved activities outside the centre in daytime.
