The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department this morning (August 1) mounted a blitz operation in Tsuen Wan against meat shop malpractices.
Department officers seized about 135 kilogrammes of pork, suspected to be of dubious origin, from a fresh provision shop on ground floor, 111 Chuen Lung Street. Two men were assisting investigations.
A department spokesman said anyone possessing for sale meat not of lawful origin was committing an offence and was liable to a maximum fine of $50,000 and six months' imprisonment.
"The department will continue to closely monitor the sale of meat at retail level and take stringent enforcement action to safeguard food safety and public health," he said.
"Anyone who has doubts about meat being sold at retail outlets should call the department's hotline at 2868 0000."
