Proprietor fined for violation of safety rule

    Hong Kong ¡V China Concrete Co Ltd. was fined $80,000 at Fanling Magistrates' Court today (August 1) for violating the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance.  The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident at a work place in Yuen Long on September 18, 2006. A worker was killed by a flying tyre assembly while he was inflating the tyre of a wheel loader.

     According to Section 6A(2)(a) of the ordinance, the proprietor must provide and maintain a system of work that is safe and without risks to employees' health.  

     In addition, Section 6A(2)(c) of the ordinance says the proprietor should provide information, instruction, training and supervision to ensure the health and work safety of the employee.  

     The maximum penalty for both regulations is a fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for six months.
