SLW visits Tin Shui Wai (with photos)

    The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, visited two welfare units and two families on assistance in Tin Shui Wai today (July 26) to understand their needs as well as to hear their views on welfare services.

     Accompanied by the Yuen Long District Social Welfare Officer of the Social Welfare Department (SWD), Mrs Loretta Chau Liu Fung-yee, Mr Cheung visited the SWD・s Tin Shui Wai (South) Social Security Field Unit and learned the experience of frontline staff in handling Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) cases.

     Afterwards, Mr Cheung visited two CSSA families, including a single-parent family who has joined the SWD・s New Dawn Project under the CSSA Scheme. He encouraged the recipients to strive from :receiving assistance; to :self-reliance;.

     Mr Cheung then visited the Caritas Tin Yuet Elderly Centre and watched some elders participating in recreational activities. He also listened to their views on the provision of welfare services.

     Mr Cheung said that the Yuen Long District Social Welfare Office had re-engineered its services in recent years and had invited non-government organisations to set up more service units in the district. The facilities commissioned this year included Yang Memorial Methodist Social Service Tin Shui Wai Family Education and Support Centre, St. James・ Settlement Youth Service TeenS・ World and Tung Wah Group of Hospitals Jockey Club Tin Shui Wai Integrated Services Centre.

     Other facilities coming on stream in the district next year are a special child care centre cum early education and training centre, a district elderly community centre and a residential care home for the elderly.

     Mr Cheung hoped that the services provided by the SWD and subvented organisations could help build up a caring community by fostering a spirit of helping others as well as self help.
