Commentary

A government spokesman pointed out that merchandise exports sustained another month of double-digit growth in June, as the global trading environment remained largely favourable despite the softness of the US economy.  The further weakening of the Hong Kong dollar along with the US dollar in recent months also helped export competitiveness.

The spokesman further pointed out that the near-term outlook will hinge on how the Mainland economy would be affected by further tightening measures, whether a soft landing of the US economy is likely, and if the economies in Europe and Asia could maintain its current growth pace.  The exchange rate movements are also relevant factors to watch out.
