A well-established legislative, financial and transportation infrastructure and geographical location advantages made Hong Kong  a prime choice as the regional hub for swift and efficient distribution of traded items sourced from Mainland China.

Speaking at a business luncheon today (July 24, San Francisco time), organised by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in San Francisco, Postmaster General, Hongkong Post Mr Tam Wing-pong said Mainland China was entering a new era of fast economic growth in the international platform.  Many enterprises including Hongkong Post were able to capitalise on the business opportunities through the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement (CEPA) signed between the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government and the Central People's Government.

"CEPA has played an important role in the economic development of Hong Kong and the Mainland.  It is a mutually beneficial arrangement, allowing Hong Kong to explore the vast Mainland market while assisting Mainland China in integrating with the world economy.

"As Mainland China's international trade has been growing at a fast pace, demand for time-sensitive back-up services like the express mail service becomes important.  The daily express mail volume is expected to treble to 2.3 million items by 2015.  The rapid growth in international mail and parcel volume creates opportunity in the short/medium terms for making use of Hongkong Post's transit service," Mr Tam said.

Apart from the conventional services, Hongkong Post can also serve as a "Value-added National Gateway to Postal Network of China".  Riding on Hongkong Post's well-established infrastructure and high performance, the value-added hubbing service offered by Hongkong Post could facilitate growth of China Post's business on the international front, Mr Tam said.

In terms of logistic business, Hongkong Post could perform the function of a regional logistics agent which would provide overseas communication, stock management, local delivery and value added services, serving the Greater China Region.
