
Employer fined $40,000 for safety rules violation

Perfect Plan Limited trading as Itamae Sushi was fined $40,000 at Kowloon City Magistrates' Court today (July 24) for violation of the Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.
The case involved a fatal accident on September 16, 2006, at a workplace in Mong Kok. A worker sustained fatal burns when a fire broke out during the refilling of an ethanol container.
According to Section 6(1) of the ordinance, an employer must ensure the safety and health at work for all employees. Any employer who fails to do so is liable to a maximum fine of $200,000 and to imprisonment for six months.
