Pictured is Su Shi's "Letter on the Consignation of Author's Graveyard" of the Northern Song dynasty. This letter is addressed to two monks at the Zhiping Monastery in Su's hometown in Sichuan. Su was writing to entrust them with the care of his family tombs. The brushwork is round and plump with short strokes and broad structure. In blending features of the draft-cursive script into his running script, Su was already experimenting for originality in so early a work.
