Two men were convicted by the Fanling Magistrates' Courts today (July 17) for possession for sale of prohibited food and fined $30,000 and $20,000 respectively.

The two men were arrested during an operation against the sale of pork of dubious origin by Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) officers in Shek Wu Hui Market, Sheung Shui, on June 2 last year.

"The department would continue to closely monitor the sale of meat at retail level and take stringent enforcement action to safeguard food safety and public health," an FEHD spokesman said.

The maximum penalty for the above offence is a fine of $50,000 and six months' imprisonment.
