The Department of Health has published two new Chinese books in simple language - one on how to maintain a healthy diet and the other how to look after old people with dementia.
The books, entitled "On Healthy Eating: The Science and Lore of Food and Eating" and "Dementia Care: Frequently asked Questions and Answers" are now on sale in major Chinese book stores and at the Hong Kong Book Fair tomorrow (July 18).
A department spokesman said the two books were very informative and easy to read. They would serve as a useful reference to those who cared about their health and to people looking after dementia patients.
The book on healthy eating discussed a variety of popular topics on food and diet from a scientific perspective.
"With a better understanding of their own eating habits, readers can learn how to maintain a balanced diet so as to improve their health," the spokesman said.
The book comes in a box set which contains recipes for healthy snacks and a DVD that provided practical tips on the choice of healthy food as well as cooking demonstrations.
The book on dementia care provides professional advice on the caring techniques for dementia patients and addresses the problems frequently encountered by their carers.
"The book is published to help people to better understand the needs and feelings of the patients.
"Based on practical experiences, this book teaches the basics of dementia care while emphasising understanding, communication and acceptance between carers and the people for whom they are caring," the spokesman said.
Two DVDs on the caring of elders with mild/moderate to severe level of dementia, highlighting the experience of people looking after dementia patients, are also included in the box set.
The two books are priced at $85 and $88 respectively and at the Cosmos Bookshops a 20% discount will be offered to holders of Senior Citizen Card.
