Young musicians showcase their achievements

    About 400 budding musicians, who received intensive training from renowned overseas and Chinese musicians at the "2007 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp" will perform in two afternoon concerts to share their achievements with the public.

     A concert to be performed by the Camp Symphonic Band, Junior Chinese Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra will be held at 3pm on July 29 at the Concert Hall of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

     Highlights of the programme include Hultgren's "Concert Prelude" and "Bushdance", Yu Chiu-foor's "The Dances", Zhou Chenglong's "Golden Late Autumn", Bernstein's "Overture to Candide" and Bach's "Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor".

     Another concert, to be given by the Camp Junior String Orchestra, Youth Choir and Chinese Orchestra, will be held at 3pm on August 5 at the Auditorium of the Tuen Mun Town Hall, playing Elgar's "Serenade in E Minor, Op. 20", Johann Strauss Jr.'s "Pizzicato Polka", Mendelssohn's "There Shall a Star Come Out of Jacob", Joel's "And So It Goes", Zhu Bin's "Overture to Celebrating the Spring Festival" and Kuan Nai-chung's "The Burning Phoenix".

     Conductors for the concerts are Assistant Conductor of Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of Saint Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra Mr Scott Parkman; Director of Wind Symphony Programe at the Queensland Conservatorium of Griffith University Mr Ralph Hultgren; Conductor of Central National Music Orchestra and Resident Conductor of China Youth National Music Orchestra Mr Liu Sha; and Professor of voice and Director of choral activities of St John's University in Minnesota Dr Axel Theimer.

     Presented by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the "2007 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp Concerts" are part of the summer extravaganza "International Arts Carnivals 2007".

     The Hong Kong Youth Music Camp is a major annual summer music activity of Music Office to provide intensive training to musicians aged 10 to 25 in a scenic campsite. The participating musicians are also encouraged to take part in recreational and sports activities at the camp.

     Tickets at $60 and $40 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessionary tickets are available for full-time students, senior citizens, people with disabilities and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
