Asian premiere of powerful "Blackbird"
**************************************

Hong Kong-based Theatre du Pif will next month (August) perform David Harrower's powerful play "Blackbird".

Directed by Toronto's Jovanni Sy and starring one of Canada's leading stage performers Ashley Wright and local award-winning actress Bonni Chan, the Asian premiere will be staged at the Studio Theatre, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, at 8pm, August 30 and 31 (Thursday and Friday); 4pm and 8.30pm on September 1 (Saturday) and 5pm on September 2 (Sunday).

"Blackbird" is a brilliantly written, powerful and provocative two-hander about the reunion of a middle-aged man and a woman, with whom he had a sexual relationship when she was 12. The man was sent to jail and on his release assumed a new identity and began rebuilding his life. Fifteen years later, she had thought of nothing else and on discovering a photo of him in a trade magazine, sets out to find him, with shattering consequences.

In 2005, "Blackbird" thrilled and shocked audiences at the Edinburgh International Festival. The controversial production, directed by the legendary German director Peter Stein wowed the critics and transferred to London where it won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play.

Performed in English with Chinese surtitles, the production contains adult content.

"Blackbird" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Tickets priced at $120 and $180 are now available at URBTIX outlets, while senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients can have 50% off (limited quotas for students and CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis).
