A special screening of the award-winning "After This Our Exile" and a dialogue with the director, Mr Patrick Tam, was held at the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center in New York today (July 14, New York time).
Speaking at the reception hosted by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York (NYETO), director Ms Monica Chen honored Mr Tam and the outstanding achievements he has attained with this moving tale of the complex emotional bond between a father and son.
She said, ¡§This is a shining example that Hong Kong film has retained much of its distinctive identity and continues to play a prominent part on the world cinema stage after the handover.
¡§The Hong Kong government is committed to the promotion and development of the film industry. A Hong Kong Film Development Council was established in April this year to advise the Government on the overall policy and strategy for the short and long term development of the local film industry.¡¨
¡§An increase of some US$38.5 million has been earmarked for the Film Development Fund with an expanded scope to provide funding support for small-to-medium budget film productions,¡¨ she added.
Presented by the Film Society of Lincoln Center and sponsored by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) in New York, tonight¡¦s event is the first of three film events to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. In the pipeline are ¡§The New Decade: Hong Kong Film¡¨ at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in August and ¡§Recent Film from Hong Kong¡¨ at the Film Society of Lincoln Center in October.
Patrick Tam returns to directing after 17 years with ¡§After This Our Exile¡¨ which has won the Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor and Best New Performer in the 26th Hong Kong Film Awards; the awards of Best Feature Film, Best Leading Actor and Best Supporting Actor in the 43rd Golden Horse Awards; and the Best Asian Film Award and Award for Best Artistic Contribution at the 19th Tokyo International Film Festival.
