Renowned conductor and violinist Lim Kek-han will next month (August) perform in a concert with Hong Kong China Philharmonic Orchestra, guest conductor Terry Leung and coloratura Vivian Chan Lai-chun.
In the concert, Lim will perform the violin solo on He Zhanhao and Chen Gan's "Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto" conducted by Terry Leung; Vivian Chan Lai-chun will deliver Offenbach's "Les oiseaux dans la charmille" (The Doll's Song), Strauss's "Laughing Song" (from Die Fledermaus) and Arditi's "Kiss Waltz". The orchestra will also play Li Huanzhi's "Spring Festival Overture", Schubert's "Symphony No. 5 in B-flat, D. 485" and Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture".
Lim Kek-han studied violin under renowned Russian violinist Ywan Federoff and Dutch master Frits Hinse, and later graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in Amsterdam. Lim was the concertmaster of the Netherlands Symphony Orchestra and the Conductor and Music Director of the Central Radio Symphony Orchestra. He founded the Lim Kek Han Philharmonic Orchestra in 1977, with himself as Music Director and Principal Conductor.
Vivian Chan Lai-chun began her music training in voice under Chen Leh, renowned vocalists Chiu Shao-chiu and Lola Young. She was invited to perform as soloist in the "Yellow River Cantata" concert in Beijing, which was accompanied by the Tianjin Symphony Orchestra. Chan is currently the Artistic Director and conductor of the Boheme Children's Choir.
Terry Leung learnt violin under Luis B Garcia and Lim Kek-han. He received a scholarship in 1993 to further his studies at the University of Missuri-Kanasas City Conservatory of Music in the US under renowned violinists Tiberius Kausner and Paul Hatton. Leung is now the concertmaster, guest conductor and soloist of the Hong Kong China Philharmonic Orchestra.
Hong Kong China Philharmonic Orchestra originated from the Lim Kek Han Philharmonic Orchestra. Past performances include the "Yellow River Cantata" concert and an outdoor concert co-ordinated with a 300-member choir in the Festival of Asian Arts 1982, which was recorded by the Beijing Central People's Broadcasting and Television Unit and broadcast nation-wide on mainland China.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "Hong Kong China Philharmonic Orchestra Concert" will be staged at 8pm on August 4 (Saturday) at the Auditorium, Tuen Mun Town Hall. Tickets priced at $120, $90 and $60, are now available at URBTIX outlets. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A 10% discount applies to Friends of LCSD performing venues.
