"Collective Memories in Movie Posters" exhibition at the Hong Kong Film Archive (with photos)
*********************************************************

Hong Kong film posters stand witness to the thriving film industry of this city and viewing them is a way of reminiscing the past and savoring cultural identities.

The Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) has a poster collection of about 4,000 films, ranging from the 50s to the present. The archival treasure witnesses a history spanning more than half a century from the harsh time in the post-war period to the golden age of Hong Kong cinema in the 80s and 90s. Around 80 posters are now on display at the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA)'s new exhibition "Collective Memories in Movie Poster". Admission is free.

Amongst those selected in the exhibition are poster of "The Enchanting Shadow" (1960), a film that travelled once to Cannes; a memorable poster of "The Legend of Purple Hairpin" (1959) that carries the images of Yam Kim-fai and Pak Suet-sin.

Other representative Hong Kong film posters stocked by the archive include Lam Kar-sing's social comedy "Half a Bed" (1964), Fong Yim-fun's "An Orphan Raised on Love" (1957), Linda Lin's "Cinderella and Her Little Angels" (1959), Ye Feng's "Sister Long Legs" (1960), Bruce Lee's "Fist of Fury" (1972), "The Big Boss" (1971) and many others.

The poster design and printing methods also vary to a large extent. It is a rare chance to see these original posters and a precious moment to revive collective memories.

The exhibition shall run in two phases in the Exhibition Hall of the HKFA according to posters' chronological order. Phase I, which is on display from now until August 19, features posters from 1948 to 1978. Phase II will goes from August 25 to October 1, will feature posters from the New Wave in 1979 to more recent years.

A selection of Hong Kong film posters will also be on display at the Main Atrium of Tuen Mun Town Plaza from July 22 to September 2.

Exhibits include the earliest collection from the film "The Soul of China" (1948), "Princess Hibiscus" (1957), Jeanette Lin's "Our Sister Hedy" (1957), Grace Chang's "The June Bride" (1960), Josephine Siao's "Bride in Chains" (1968), comedies "The Apartment of 14 Families" (1964), "The Fascinating Group" (1971), and the famous by Shaw film "The House of 72 Tenants" (1973).
