The Labour Department reminded employers and employees in the industrial sector to pay more attention to industrial safety in the light of a recent court case.
Unipower China Limited was fined $30,000 at Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court earlier for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance.
The case involved a fatal accident on October 11, 2006 at a workplace in Tsing Yi. A worker was conducting lubrication work to a quay crane and he went missing. His body was found off the shore the following day.
According to Section 6A(2)(a) of the ordinance, the employer shall provide and maintain a system of work that is safe and without risks to the health of the employee. Any employer who fails to do so is liable to a maximum fine of $500,000.
According to Section 6A(2)(c) of the ordinance, the employer shall also provide such information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to ensure the safety and health of the employee. Any employer who fails to do so is liable to a maximum fine of $500,000.
