Financial assistance for family of deceased fireman
***************************************************

The Government today (June 26) approved the provision of $3.36 million  under a financial assistance scheme for family members of Wong Ka-hei, who died on May 22 while on duty in searching for and rescuing people reported to be trapped in a fire in a Tsuen Wan industrial building.

The Chairman of the Committee on Financial Assistance for Family Members of those who Sacrifice their Lives to Save Others, Dr York Chow, said: "The late Mr Wong's selfless devotion to the Hong Kong community, together with the high level of professionalism displayed, commands our greatest respect.

"Despite the known danger, he risked his own life to carry out the firefighting and rescue operation.  His act in a highly hazardous situation demonstrated a high degree of gallantry and selflessness.

"We deeply mourn the loss of the dedicated fireman.  The financial assistance scheme represents the Government's recognition of his gallant act and, in a practical sense, our respect for the heroism he has displayed in serving the community."

"We sincerely hope that the assistance provided under the scheme can give some relief to his family members at this difficult time," Dr Chow said.

The Financial Assistance Scheme for Family Members of those who Sacrifice their Lives to Save Others was set up in January, 2002, to provide financial assistance to family members of those who lose their lives attempting to save or protect others.

A committee comprising the Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food as the chairman and four non-official members was set up to serve as the approving authority.  The current non-official members include Mr Lee Jark-pui, Mr Ng Sze-fuk, Mr Poon Siu-ping and Miss Gabriella Wong Siu-ling.

Under the scheme, the amount of financial assistance for each approved application is worked out according to a formula having regard to the age and normal retirement age of the deceased and the prevailing median monthly employment earnings, with minimum and maximum levels at $3 million and $6 million respectively at present.
