Organised by the Electrical & Mechanical Engineering Industry of Skills Upgrading Scheme (SUS) of the Education Manpower Bureau for the first time, the E&M Excellent Students Award presentation ceremony was held today (June 26) to honour a group of SUS students with excellent performance of six categories, including Telecommunication/Security alarm, Electrical, Air-conditioning/Refrigeration, Fire services engineering, Water plumbing engineering and Lift/Escalator engineering.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Convener of the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Industry of SUS Mr Paul Chong Kin-lit, said this was the first E&M Excellent Students Award organised by SUS. "It aims to give credits and encouragements to our students, who upgrade their skills continuously and strive for outstanding performance in their work," Mr Chong said.
Another officiating guest, Acting Chief Electrical and Mechanical Engineer /Electricity Legislation of the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, Mr Pang Yiu-hung, said, "The awardees who possess professional skills and high regard of work safety, have attended SUS courses of different skill aspects. They have also demonstrated the success of SUS on enhancing in-service workers’ competitiveness and promoting the culture of lifelong learning which benefits their professional skills and the industry."
Also officiated at the ceremony were the Chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Electrical and Mechanical Contractors Limited, Mr Tsang Chiu-kwan; the Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Electrical & Mechanical Industries Trade Unions, Mr Lai Chi-wah; the Chairman of the Electrical and Mechanical Services Training Board, Vocational Training Council, Mr Chan Lee-shing; the Vice President of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, Mr Peter Wong; the Convener of E&M Excellent Students Award Working Group, Mr Chow Cheuk-tao and the Assistant Secretary for Education and Manpower, Mr Derek Lai.
Since its launch in 2001, SUS has extended to 24 different designated industries. It seeks to provide training opportunities for in-service workers of modest educational background (secondary level or below) to grasp updated skills and professional knowledge in order for them to sustain their competitiveness in the labour market. The scheme also aims to promote continuing education and a lifelong learning culture in the Hong Kong community.
