In response to media enquiries, the spokesperson for Prince of Wales Hospital (PWH) gave the following reply:
PWH confirmed a serious medical incident on 20 June (Wednesday) involving a 21-year old female patient. A doctor wrongly administered an intravenous chemotherapy drug through the intrathecal route. The hospital immediately informed the Hospital Authority head office and the family members of the patient about the incident. The hospital has expressed deepest apology to the family. The patient is at present treated in the Intensive Care Unit and her condition is critical.
PWH has set up an investigation panel to look into the incident and has suspended all clinical duties of the involved staff.
The Chief Executive of Hospital Authority also expressed great concern on the incident and said that it was a tragic incident. He sincerely apologized to the family. Hospital Authority will take appropriate follow-up actions, including inviting an overseas expert to participate in a panel to investigate into the incident. Hospital Authority will announce the details of the investigation panel as soon as possible.
