*******************************************************

The Government today (June 22) announced that the Chief Executive had appointed Mr Nicholas Brooke as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTPC) for two years from July 1.

"Mr Brooke, as a board member, has made valuable contributions to steering the development of the corporation since its inception," the Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology, Mr Joseph WP Wong, said.  "The corporation has now built solid foundations for its development which will be augmented by Science Park Phase Two.  We are confident that under Mr Brooke's leadership, the corporation will continue to help Hong Kong stride forward in innovation and technology development."

The Government also announced, with effect from July 1, the appointments of Mr Raymond Chan Wai-man and Mr Joseph Pang Yuk-wing as HKSTPC board members for a period of two years.

With effect from the same date, five current members of the Board are re-appointed: Mrs Alice Chin Hang-yin, Professor Nancy Ip Yuk-yu, Professor Lawrence J Lau and Mr Lee Shing-see for two years, and Mr Wong Kai-man for one year.

HKSTPC, which began operation on May 7, 2001, manages the Science Park, three industrial estates and an InnoCentre and supports innovation and technology development in Hong Kong.  It provides a comprehensive range of services to cater for the needs of industry at various stages, ranging from nurturing technology start-ups through the incubation programme, providing premises and services in the Science Park for applied research and development activities, creating and sustaining a design cluster in the InnoCentre, to providing developed land in the industrial estates for production.

"We are glad that the corporation has a board of directors in which there is a good mix of expertise to steer effective fulfilment of its public mission," Mr Wong said.

"With their expertise and knowledge, I am confident the corporation will further enhance the existing technological infrastructure to contribute to Hong Kong's position as a regional centre for innovation and technology," he said.

The term of appointment for the chairman of the board, Mr Victor Lo, and three incumbent members of the board - Dr Herbert Hui, Mr George Chung and Mr Johnny Yeung - will expire on June 30.  "Mr Lo, Dr Hui, Mr Chung and Mr Yeung have provided valuable contribution to steering the corporation in pursuing its public mission.  The achievement of the corporation is due in no small part to their guidance and wise counsel," Mr Wong said.
