"2 in 1 - Works by Luke Ching Chin-wai" will be held at the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre from tomorrow (June 15) to June 25.
In the exhibition, Ching applies the concepts of construction (2 in 1) and destruction (1 into 2) in his creation to express his understanding of issues related to the society, culture and systems. Through artistic representations, the exhibition provides audiences with fresh perspectives on daily life.
Since the handover of Hong Kong in 1997, people have been living under the unprecedented social system of "One Country, Two Systems". When Hong Kong is this year celebrating the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Ching attempts to construct and deconstruct the city in an artistic framework to express his experiences as inspired by the notion of "One Country, Two Systems".
Ching created artworks in two approaches - to combine two similar objects/concepts/systems into one, or to split one object/concept/system into two. In the artwork "Apple Daily and Wen Wei Po", for example, he interweaved the front-page stories of the two newspapers featuring the incident of bomb explosion at the underground station in London. The image of the bombed station still remained identifiable, yet the texts were blurred and became meaningless after the process.
The exhibition is part of the "Artist in Residence Programmes" organised by the Visual Arts Centre. During his residency from January to March, 2007, Ching conducted a series of programmes including a talk, workshops on cockroach making and pinhole family photography to share with the public his experiences and insights of artistic creation.
Since 1992, the "Artist in Residence Programmes" has provided more than 30 local artists with free workshop facilities in return for their service in giving lectures, demonstrations and workshops with the aims to arouse public interest in art, and to encourage artistic creation.
The Visual Arts Centre is located at 7A Kennedy Road, Central. The Exhibition Hall is open daily from 10am to 9pm and is closed on Tuesdays. Admission is free for the exhibition.
