A Kwai Chung Hospital spokesperson announced today (June 12) that since June 6, seven patients (aged from 18 to 43) of two male wards had presented with symptoms of skin abscess. The patients are now being treated under isolation and are in stable condition. Test results of the seven patients are positive to Streptococcus pyogenes. The hospital will continue to provide treatment to the patients and closely monitor their condition. All other patients in the wards concerned are under close surveillance.
Admission and visiting to the wards are suspended for the time being. Infection control measures have been enhanced while thorough cleansing and disinfection have also been carried out in the wards.
The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow up.
