Employer fined $102,000 for violation of work safety rules

    Xun Xiang Metalware Company Limited was fined $102,000 at Kwun Tong Magistrates' Court today (June 7) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance. The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident at a work place in Kwun Tong, in which a worker was assisting in the lifting of a metal block by a crane. During the process, the wire sling broke suddenly. The metal block fell and hit the worker.

     According to section 6A(2)(a) of the ordinance, the employer shall provide and maintain a system of work that is safe and without risks to the health of the employee. Any employer who fails to do so is liable to a maximum fine of $500,000.

     According to section 6A(2)(c) of the Ordinance, the employer shall also provide such information, instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to ensure the safety and health of the employee. Any employer who fails to do so is liable to a maximum fine of $500,000.
