A 38-year-old male prisoner who reported sick in Stanley Prison about 8.30am today (June 5), collapsed when he was escorted to the institution's hospital.
After receiving treatment from the medical officer in Stanley Prison, he was sent to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital and was certified dead at 10.53am, a spokesperson of the Correctional Services Department said. Records showed that he received treatment for pneumonia a month ago.
Police have been informed of the incident. An inquest will be held by the Coroner's Court.
The prisoner, surnamed Vu, was convicted of remaining in Hong Kong without authority and was given a 19-month jail sentence on May 12 this year.
