Speech by CE at the Grand Opening of Terminal 2 at Hong Kong International Airport (English only) (with photos)
************************************************************

Following is the speech by the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, at the Grand Opening of Terminal 2 at Hong Kong International Airport this evening (June 1) (English only):

Vice Minister Gao, Victor, Stanley, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am delighted to help celebrate the opening of Terminal 2.

Hong Kong has never been a place to stand still. The opening of this terminal is a classic example of our constant efforts to improve, and to build on our strengths.

What does it tell us? First of all, that the demands of the international aviation sector are growing and that we must grow to meet these demands. Second, it underscores our commitment to providing a first-class experience for those using our airport - an airport that has consistently been ranked amongst the best in the world. We have set the bar high - now we are raising it further still. I know that all of the 60,000 people who work at Hong Kong International Airport are up to the task.

The design of Terminal 2 is also a telling sign of where we see potential for further growth and co-operation. The multi-modal transport interchange - with road, rail and sea connections - will greatly enhance the attractiveness of our airport as the major international passenger and air cargo hub serving the Pearl River Delta. Hong Kong's global connectivity - and our location at the heart of Asia - is a major factor for international businesses looking for a regional base. We want to ensure that it is also a major asset for Chinese companies in the PRD region and beyond which are looking to take their products and services to the rest of the world.

Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to congratulate Victor and all those at the Airport Authority who worked so hard to give us this gleaming new terminal. Together with other projects in the pipeline, such as a new satellite passenger concourse and additional air cargo and aircraft maintenance facilities, I am confident that HKIA will continue to be amongst the best in the world. But then again, we would expect nothing less.

     Thank you.
