The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (May 21) pursued six claims in the Small Claims Tribunal for some $100,000 on behalf of eight employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employers.
At the hearing, two defendants, Koo Wai Kwan trading as Shang Hai Hung Qiao Restaurant and Yang Chung Nin formerly trading as Cheung Tai Steel Furniture Co, did not dispute the amounts claimed. The Adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA $29,020.98 and $12,888.32, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.
The other four defendants - Lee Ying Fat trading as Kui Wing, Cheung Tak Ming trading as Ho Sang Printing Co, Gold Merit (China) Limited trading as Onion Cafe & Restaurant and Cheung Chun Fai, Wan trading as Urban Angel Hair & Beauty Salon - did not appear. In their absence, the Adjudicator ordered them to pay the MPFA $35,381.04, $24,510.92, $3,911.76 and $735.55, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.
The amounts awarded will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The Tribunal further awarded $120, $160, $170, $180, $126 and $320 as the costs in respect of the claims.
