The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department this morning (April 24) mounted a blitz operation in Fanling against meat shop malpractices.

Department officers seized some 40 kilogrammes of pork, suspected to be of dubious origin, from a fresh provision shop at stall no 14, G/F, Wah Ming Estate Market in Fanling. Two men arrested during the operation were assisting investigations.

A department spokesman said anyone possessing meat not of lawful origin for sale was committing an offence and was liable to a maximum fine of $50,000 and six months' imprisonment.

"The department will continue to closely monitor the sale of meat at retail level and take stringent enforcement action to safeguard food safety and public health," he said.

"Anyone who has doubts about meat being sold at retail outlets should call the department's hotline at 2868 0000."
